The latest fad that is making headlines is intermittent fasting. It’s important to note that this is not another diet plan, it’s a timed approach to eating. No need to panic, food is very much a part of your life! This has been shown to be a powerful way to lose weight yet stay healthy. So, what is this new plan all about and how does it benefit us in the long run?

What’s it all about?

When it comes to fasting, the question is not what, but when. The focus is not on the foods you eat but rather when you eat them. Intermittent fasting is qualified as a pattern where you alternate between eating and fasting. What most people tend to do it fast for 16 hours or even 24 hours twice a week. This might sound like a lot, but truth is, humans have been fasting like this for millennia when they had to scavenge for food for days on end. We are built for it more than we think.

How do we go about doing this?

There are several types of intermittent fasting methods that exist. The most common one is called 16/8. This consists of cycling between an 8-hour window where you can eat, followed by a 16 hour one where you fast. Simply put, limit yourself to eating between 12pm-8pm and then fast for the 16 hours that follow. There are definitely other types of intermittent fasting methods that exist, but this one is the most popular because it’s the easiest to adhere to. However, see what works best for you!

Why go through all this?

Now you might be asking yourself: What’s the purpose of all this? How does it affect my health? First of all, the most straightforward reason is weight loss. When you fast, you reduce your caloric intake, thereby helping with your weigh management goals. Second of all, fasting goes much deeper than meets the eye. With intermittent fasting, your growth hormone levels exponentially increase, which helps with fat loss. Insulin is also affected by this eating program as the levels of this hormone decrease. Your cellular functions and gene expression are also triggered by this. From the repair process of cells to the weight shed by the body, intermittent fasting benefits the entire health of the body.
